Introducing the Eighth Issue of the CBEG Economic Briefer

Dr. Arthur Bainomugisha, Executive Director | @ACODE_Uganda

Season’s greetings from the Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment (ACODE)! As we head into this year’s festive season, it is my great pleasure to present to you our eighth issue of the ACODE’s Economic Briefer; for the period December 2019 – February 2020. In this issue, we provide alternative policy ideas on contemporary economic issues on Uganda’s economy and in deed the entire East and Southern Africa sub-regions (click here to read the previous issue).

The theme for the eighth issue focuses on Growth and Development in the digital era. Over the past decade, the world has increasingly transitioned into a digital age. The dawn of the digital age has mostly been characterised by a rise in e-commerce. In developing countries such as Uganda and Kenya, the rise of e-commerce is slowly but significantly altering the mode of business in the transport sector (with the rise of Uber and Safeboda) as well as the trade sector which has seen the rise of Jumia- an e-commerce consumer goods retailer. While, these digital alterations in the economy present several growth opportunities, they pose risks too. It is therefore important to address how Africa’s growth can be harnessed in the digital age.

In this seventh Issue, we present a leading article from Mr. Keith Muhakanizi, the Secretary to the Treasury in Uganda’s Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. Mr. Muhakanizi’s article addresses how Uganda can harness its growth in the digital era. We’ve also carried an article from Mr. Robert Nsubuga; the Information Officer at ACODE that examines the critical issues Africa must address to harness growth and development in the digital era. We’ve also presented some highlights from our recent research and policy engagements to inform further research and policy around the world.

Finally, we invite your feedback to help us know how useful the Briefer is to your work and how we can improve it.
